Sweat & (Outside of) the City

The ultimate car driver has RETURNED from the big city to a delightful land where she can tool around in Flanders, the 2004 Civic. That's right, I'm on Long Island.

Too Early for a Title

so while i've been wrapped up in opening my building
the world had actually continued outside of my door
watching all of the coverage about the hurricane is addictive
the south looks like a warzone

on a completely lighter note
i went to see "the 40-year-old virgin" last night
hilarious movie and surprisingly sweet as well
note to self: do not go to the movies the same day
NYU plans a "hey, let's go to the movies!" program
ugh

so the seattle crew left yesterday
they were great houseguests
and it was good to see them
this weekend i'm expecting lizzie musar/courtney
and perhaps kirby

and now i must prepare for the office
time for more questions and work orders

wait!
here's the funniest thing i saw recently
a yuppie couple walking their tiny dog
a dog they put little reflective ankle bracelets on
doggie fashion that combines safety!

Sixty down, a hell of a lot more to go

i'm sitting on my sofa, feet up, ice cream on my coffee table
(it's coffee ice cream--alanis style irony)

so here's the skinny
today my KICKASS staff and i had our freshmen move-in
approximately 60 folks moved into the financial district on a thursday
we've got 5 times as many coming this weekend
hell yeah my feet hurt
and it's been an adventure trying to program with NO MONEY
here's the thing, moving 60 people in isn't a lot by any means
but doing it here in NYC is extra special stressful
people coming in all hours
rosters that require rechecking at least 14 times
yet in the long run
all the headache is worth it
when you meet the new students who are excited
some of them are so adorable
it hurts

tomorrow, i get out of town company
the seattle brigade is coming to town
kelly, lee, and nick (bryn's bf) are a'visitin'
luckily, they are smart kids who can entertain themselves
they will have lots of fun sleeping on my floor

and on that note
i'm going to bed

That Burning Pain in My Shoulder is Like a Badge of Honor

so i'm going to bed shortly
in fact, i'm going to leave my office now
please take note of the time i'm writing this entry
and i bet i'm one of the RHDs who will be getting the most sleep!

really, i'm writing this entry to say
the grass is always greener on the other side
and you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone
but perhaps i'm resorting to cliches due to the fact
that i'm mentally like jello right now

and my last thought of the night
HI KELLY RONAN!
THIS ENTRY WAS FOR YOU!

Insert Funny Title Here

so today i came out of the subway at my regular stop
right outside of the world trade center
and when i get to the top of the stairs
all i see lining both sides of the street
are cop cars will their lights flashing
not so comforting
my first thought was
"damn, i'm glad i got off the subway"
never did find out what the issue was

so RA training starts tomorrow
guess who isn't prepared?
yep, that'd be me
but i will say i've managed to rid my apt
of all the boxes
AND i've managed to stash about 20
behind my wardrobe
i've gotten very creative in this new place

what else exciting?
oh yes!
my lunch with the fabulous italians and erica
well, now i have a free place to stay if i ever go visit milan
and i had the best chicken caesar salad of my life

i saw neil this weekend
now that the BFFs live in the same town
it's still ridiculously difficult to get together
which will not be the case after hell month passes

mouse update
there is no mouse
at least, not that i've seen again

and on that note
off to dinner

Ode to Life in the Big City

read as if this was a poem, and not just my crazy writing style)
i have a mouse
who lives in my house
he is gray and wee
i wish he would flee
we met late last night
he gave me a fright
as he scurried 'cross my floor
i screamed out in horror
life in the city
not too damn pretty
SJP never had the problem i see
her rent-controlled apt. on color TV

ok, that's the extent of my rhyming
and now the update
i have a humane trap in my apt
so hopefully my little friend likes chips ahoy
b/c that's my bait
i also bought something on the internet
that sounds out high pitched frequencies
and vibrations in the wall
we shall see
(hopefully no more mice)

so i'm in full august swing
RAs come in 2 days
opening in 13 days
hence, the crying spells
this is the first time i've ever had a building with summer residents
and i'll tell you
it's for the birds

but let's share good news
erica and i are going to see beck and polyphonic spree in october
at keyspan park in brooklyn
same place we saw phish
i can't wait to see how the spree translate
to a minor league ballpark
i've got my JM ticket for later that month
and maybe i'll try to get a U2 ticket
then there's MD in TOWSON(!) and NYC
for which lizzie musar needs to venture up here
i don't have any shows on the immediate horizon
but that'll change

this weekend i am going to finish unpacking
there will be no bubblewrap within 1000 feet of my person
and i will catch up on my netflix
wild and crazy times!

Neglect...

Yeah, I've gotten bad about updating this thing
and it's only going to get worse
all the Res Life people out there know that August
is our busiest time of the year
my new RAs will be back in a week
my building is in a state of chaos
but damn, i'm trying!

so here's what's been happening
i've been to 2 shows in the past 4 days
last thursday went to see ben folds in brooklyn
hipsters galore!
so many vintage t-s and funky framed glasses
ben was great, but the poor guy had laryingitis (sp?)
tonight was glen phillips and marc broussard
this show was great for many different reasons
1) i figured out how to get to the venue
which means i'm learning my way around this city
2) on the way to the show, i saw isaac mizrahi walking down the street
3) at the show, i saw citizen cope hanging out
(probably coming down from his buzz from the february seattle show)
4) i found my new favorite venue, webster hall
it's awesome! not too big, not too small
nice air-conditioned food shack downstairs
i will say the $5 bottle of water blows
but you can't have everything
BK has been my concert companion this past month
he's indulged all my wandering around the venues
complaining about the people around me
etc etc

WAIT, something bizarre happened at today's show
2 girls who were undergrads at rider when i was an RD
spotted me in the crowd and said hi
it wasn't really bizarre, just surprising

my apt is slowly coming together
i've assembled my computer desk (with only a few extra screws left over)
and a cabinet unit
absolutely no luck with the tv stand and coffee table

and ending this entry on a totally positive note
i've found true love...
my new electric broom
i push it and it sweeps stuff into its own bin
i've never felt like this before

Step into cyberspace

because i posted an ad on craigslist
it's a big city
so hell, i should meet some people
and as the people who know me
i'm sure you'd like to read it
and for your reading pleasure
here it is
you know you wanna click here

so far, i've heard from my share of creeps
hence the ps in the ad
but it sure is amusing!

so i was nervous about moving downtown
because it shuts down early, it's not as neighborhoody
blah blah blah
but i'm really enjoying being down here
first off, i swear it's 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the city
secondly, i like how it's not packed with people during the weekend
and i'm sure i'll come up with some thirdly and fourthly reasons
(yes, these are words, just like pumice as a verb
at least in my world)

and now i'm going to bed
because i'm dead tired
and i have a delightful new book to read
thanks to super cool kathy!!!
wasn't that nice of her???
i work with such great people!
people are always the best part of the job
